Award-winning director of photography and Light Storm Productions principal Walter Ortoleva is a seasoned veteran of the television and documentary film industries. To Light Storm’s clients, he brings over 22 years of experience in lighting design and direction, camera operation and crew supervision, and a boundless sense of camaraderie and humor.

Walter’s exquisite lighting and a keen sense for framing and movement has earned him six industry awards and oceans of gratitude from well-lit clients.  Over the past two decades, Walter has lit and shot international political figures, celebrities and other important personalities, including former President Bill Clinton, Madeleine Albright, Beyoncé, Hillary Swank, Oprah Winfrey, Henry Kissinger, Roger Federer and Lance Armstrong, among others.

He’s shot single and multi-camera, nationally aired live TV shows and events including the Clinton Global Initiative, the U.S. Open, Pope Benedict XVI's visit to New York City, the Republican Convention and the New York City Marathon.

His client list spans the corporate universe: Coca Cola, Estée Lauder, Newman’s Own, MasterCard, GE, AT&T, ESPN, Con Edison, and many others.

The media companies he’s worked with run the A to Z of the industry: from A&E and NBC to Spike TV and Versus.

In addition to his work at Light Storm, Walter was a freelance lighting director and camera operator for the Outdoor Life Network (OLN) at Palace Studios, working closely with OLN producers to design, light and oversee OLN studio television programs and specials.

Prior to launching Light Storm Productions in 1991, he was a Studio Supervisor at the Stamford production facilities of Connecticut Public Television (CPTV), where he designed the lighting and the look of programming including national and regional PBS specials, supervised lighting and camera crews, and lit on-location shoots.

Before that, Walter was the Director of Photography at Tele-Media Productions / Sound Concepts, a 7,500-sq.ft. studio production facility specializing in commercial, corporate, and TV show productions.  One of his earliest positions in the industry was as a camera/lighting person at Valley Cablevision, shooting local programs, commercials and sporting events.

Walter holds a BS in Corporate Video Communications from Southern Connecticut State University and a certificate in Filmmaking from New York University.  He is married and lives with his wife and daughter in Milford, Connecticut.
